It’s the week of Thanksgiving. I love this time of year. There’s an increase of energy and expectancy in the air. Christmas decorations are already out in stores, but the hustle and bustle hasn’t quite started yet.
It’s the grocery stores that are buzzing right now. Everyone is putting together the menu for their Thanksgiving feast. Visions of baked pies, roasted or deep fried turkeys, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce shaped like a can are filling homes everywhere. Schools are on a break while families travel to spend Thanksgiving with loved ones. We spend so much time focusing on being thankful during this season, and rightly so. Social Media addicts overload posts with the Thirty Day Challenge - posting one thing they are thankful for during the thirty days of November. What a great idea. There’s a better idea, however. The 365 Day Challenge. Why do we put so much effort and energy in being thankful for thirty days in November, and give so little attention to being thankful the rest of the year? Society may promote being thankful during this season, but scripture tells us to be thankful at all times.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Scripture also tells us Thanksgiving is the first step into His presence.
Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”
The presence of God is the one place on earth where every difficult situation can be changed, every broken heart mended, every shattered dream put back together, every bad attitude made right, every hard heart softened, and where everything can be changed for our good. Because of that, we should desire to be in His presence continually. If you want to find yourself in His presence today, the first step is by giving Him thanks. Thanksgiving is not just a spoken action, but it’s also a condition of the heart and a state of your mind. When your heart and mind are giving God thanks, it’s difficult for your mouth to be complaining. What’s in a persons heart comes out of their mouth. When you think of everything Jesus has done for us, you begin to realize we have so much to talk about. The season of Thanksgiving is a wonderful season, but we have so much to be thankful for in every season of life. Even in the worst of circumstances and the toughest battles of life, God has given us so much to be thankful for. If God never did anything else for us, we still have a reason to live a life of being thankful daily simply because Jesus died for our sins. This Thanksgiving, accept the challenge of showing and declaring how thankful and grateful you are every day of the year. If you do, you’ll find you have more to be thankful for than you think. It starts today. Make the decision now to give God thanks everyday that you live.
