Most every afternoon when I pick my daughter up from school, she gets into the car, puts in her earphones and gets lost in the music she’s listening to or the video she’s watching. When I ask her a question or try and say something to her, she doesn’t respond. She doesn’t hear me. With her earphones she has the ability shut out all outside voices and noise and hear only what she wants.
Don’t you wish it was that easy with hearing God’s voice? Just put on your Godphones and you can shut out all outside voices and noise and hear only the voice of God. If I could create those, that would be a Kingdom changer and a life changer. LOL!!!
Sadly, there is no such thing as Godphones, but hearing the voice of God can be easier than what many people think. If your struggling to hear God’s voice, these steps can help make it easier for you. You must first remember that the primary way God speaks to us is through His Word, The Bible. If you want to hear His voice, open up your Bible, focus, read, and listen to God speak to you.
Outside of hearing God speak through His Word, you can also discern and hear the still small voice of God as He speaks from His Spirit to yours. There are a few key steps to hearing Hjs voice. I believe as you exercise these steps, it will be like owning your very own personal Godphones.

I. Find a place to go that is quiet, away from all distractions, and clear your mind.
In today’s world that can be a very difficult task, but one that scripture teaches.
Psalm 37:7
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;”
II. Worship
One of the best things you can do to clear distractions is to spend some time in personal intimate worship. This is not the time to crank up your favorite praise song. This is the time to play slow and soft worshipful music. Worship invites and welcomes His presence into that moment. Worship is your love of Jesus on display. I have found that when you pour your love on the Father, He always responds.
III. Wait on Him.
Again, Psalm 37:7
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;”
Many people miss hearing God speak because they’re impatient and in a rush. If you’re really desperate to hear God’s voice, you will take the time or make the time to wait on Him. Don’t allow your impatience or your busy schedule to rob you of His direction, wisdom, and the time you need with Him.
IV. Pray simple and specific prayers.
Specific prayers receive specific answers. If that is true, complex prayers receive complex answers. Your complex prayers will not confuse or overwhelm God, but His complex answer may certainly overwhelm you.
Years ago, my wife and I were seeking God for direction. We felt as though a season of our life was coming to an end and we were praying about whether we should stay where we were or if it was time to move in to the next assignment He had for us. After many long and drawn out prayers, one day we agreed to pray a simple prayer and ask God to speak one of two simple words to us. Those words were “Stay” and “Go.”
We asked God to speak to us that day just one of those words. We said “Father, as we seek your direction today, speak just one word to us. Go, or stay.” By the end of the day God in a very specific way gave us the word “Go.”
Keep your prayer simple. There’s no prayer too simple that God will not answer.
V. Listen. It’s hard to hear God’s voice while you’re talking. Always make sure in your time of prayer that you close your mouth and allow God to respond or talk back. We talk way too much. Learn to listen.
It’s important to listen to hear what God says. When we hear God’s voice, it builds our faith.
Romans 10:17
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
When you fail to listen, you fail to build your faith.
When I was in college, I went to my dad’s office one day. As a pastor, he did a lot of talking. That day I was behind his desk and a white card leaning against his name plaque caught my attention. It had one word written on it. “LISTEN!” I have tried to put that to practice in my relationship with God. To listen more than I talk.
And finally,
VI. Write down what God says. It is important to write down what God speaks to you so that you can go back and remember what He said. Often when we go through a storm in life, we forget what God has said in His Word. Writing it down helps you to not forget what He has spoken.
Writing down what God speaks to you will strengthen your confidence in being able to hear His voice. As you go back and read His words, it helps you to relive that moment you heard His voice. You remember what you felt and what you did to position yourself to hear His voice.
God’s voice will change your life. It will change your world. Genesis tells us that God has the ability and power to speak into chaos and darkness and create something amazing and beautiful. He also has the ability to speak into your chaotic life and create something amazing and beautiful too. Find yourself today in a place to hear His voice.
